STATEMENT

Although my art journey began many years ago, this new body of work began during a personal sabbatical inward, a deliberate pause to reconnect with embodied, tactile creation after a prolonged immersion in the digital realm. It is the result of a return to slowness, to nature, and to a search for meaning through making. What emerged was a deep exploration of the interconnectedness of all life, where opposites coexist in dynamic balance: light and dark, internal and external, chaos and order.

Working primarily in ink, graphite and pencil, I explore the language of flowers not only as symbols of beauty, but as intricate maps of memory, healing, and inner knowing. I use both abstract and symbolic botanical imagery to highlight the elegance and intelligence of natural forms. Florals, in particular, serve as both subject and metaphor: conduits for exploring the cyclical, self-sustaining systems that shape both physical and metaphysical realms.

While my process is rooted in intuition, each piece is guided by a contemplative engagement with its botanical subject—many of which carry historical, medicinal, or cultural significance. The act of drawing becomes a meditative practice, one that allows for both precision and spontaneity, structure and surrender. It is a space where intention meets the unknown.

This collection of work is a way to honor the interconnectedness of all things and to remind us of the interdependence, resilience, and profound symmetry between the universe within and the world without.

BIO

Yushin Kato is a bicultural interdisciplinary artist and graphic designer based in Brooklyn, New York. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Florida with a minor in Art History. Over the past decade Kato’s career as a designer and art director has led her to work with reputable brands such as Shiseido, Derek Lam, and Victoria’s Secret. Her fine art work has been showcased in a range of institutions, from local coffee shops, bars and restaurants to the Brooklyn Museum. On September 4, 2025 she celebrated her first solo exhibition in New York City. She maintains an ongoing partnership with the interactive mini-gallery MystryMart.
